It's interesting for me to compare this original version of Distance with the one recorded a few years later. The meter is more straight, in a "rock folk" style here, whereas the later version is more "alt country".

The distance grows
The quiet drops
The bird of the soul that I’ve spoken of
The flutter and beat of it
Weakens and slows
My language is broken
The distance grows

The fire cools
The madness heals
And pains no more the heart that
And now are wise
Who once were fools
For wisdom is sorrow’s child
The fire cools

In the distance
I can see
The shape of things
I hope will be

Our hearts are torn
But we are blessed
For wisdom grows
At sorrow’s breast

And the bird of the soul
In fire is born
Oh flutters and beats again
The hearts once torn

In the distance
I can see
The shape of things
I hope will be

This is a partial musical record of that journey. ... more
