about

This version is quite a bit slower than the original, probably due to the drumming of Dave Tweedie which was always pretty laid back. It also sounds a lot more country-ish. I'm not sure which I prefer. I'd like to get this song considered for use on the hit TV show Nashville, so if anybody knows Frankie Pine (music supervisor) then play it for her please!

lyrics

The distance grows
The quiet drops
The bird of the soul that I’ve spoken of
Stops
The flutter and beat of it
Weakens and slows
My language is broken
The distance grows

The fire cools
The madness heals
And pains no more the heart that
Feels
And now are wise
Who once were fools
For wisdom is sorrow’s child
The fire cools

In the distance
I can see
The shape of things
I hope will be

Our hearts are torn
But we are blessed
For wisdom grows
At sorrow’s breast

And the bird of the soul
In fire is born
Oh flutters and beats again
The hearts once torn

In the distance
I can see
The shape of things
I hope will be

about

Diana Rosalind New Orleans, Louisiana

After being discovered by Bobby McFerrin as a young vocal improviser in San Francisco, I spent some years writing and performing with ensembles that remain important in the history of Bay Area arts, then did time tangling with the music biz in LA & NYC, followed by a decade in Europe, recording all the while, before coming "home" to NOLA. This is a partial musical record of that journey. ... more
