about

This sounds quite fucked up which is a pity as it was one of the first recordings we did at a really big proper professional studio. I do have the reels somewhere but had to salvage this from an old cassette (like all the pre-21st century stuff).

Sea and Sorrow features some blazing bass-slapping and popping from Jake, who I nicknamed "busy pig thumb" when he was in this phase of his artistic development (something to do with how he made the bass go "oink oink" sound), stellar guitar work from Anthony, as usual, and drumming of machine-like precision, but with soul, from Simone the funky drummer with cool percussion accents on the Quica from Todd.

lyrics

Oh
Is that water?
All in a go by my ears
Like sheets of sound
Into which I lie

Oh no
Not quite sure yet
Am I down low or up high
Don't know
Where am I?

Oh
Feel light driven
Into my own centre
So awareness climbs on

No no
Not quite sure yet
Whether I'm even alive
Don't know
Am I high?

Between the minutes
Vague on a few points of fact
Between the worlds
Never mind all of that

I am become my attention
It's alternating
Low high low high
low low low high

There was a noise
Like a vacuous kitchen
Lights outside my head
Or could it have just been
Sea and sorrow's waves
Sorrow's waves

Oh no
Feeling most unusual
Rolling like a wave does
This sickness in the pit of me

Sea and sorrow's waves
Sorrow's waves

Oh is that water
All in a go by my ears
Like sheets of sound
Into which I lie

No no
Not quite sure yet
Am I down low or up hight
Don't know
Where am I

Between the minutes
Between the worlds
Never mind all of that

Sea and sorrow's waves
Sea and sorrow's waves

about

Diana Rosalind New Orleans, Louisiana

After being discovered by Bobby McFerrin as a young vocal improviser in San Francisco, I spent some years writing and performing with ensembles that remain important in the history of Bay Area arts, then did time tangling with the music biz in LA & NYC, followed by a decade in Europe, recording all the while, before coming "home" to NOLA. This is a partial musical record of that journey. ... more
