about

This song, from about 1995 was built on the skeleton of an old Fiend song that had appeared on that original demo, called "Harlem's Roof". It was a muddled kind of a song, strong in parts but really didn't hang together as a whole. So I took the best bits, kept the basic theme lyrically (NY street life) and rewrote it as a better song.

I look forward to doing a better version of this tune at some point. It has a nice something about it.

lyrics

The day’s of my long slow life
Separate
Like the segments of an orange
Or the petals of a rotting rose
Blown from garden to gutterpipe
By the Hudson River wind

But what have roses got to do
with this cityscape?

Discarded furniture
Broken TV sets
Stringers in doorways
Trying to catch eyes
that skitter by
On pavement’s slick
With yesterday’s snow
And tears of regret

Long and slow?
No
More like rapid and spent
Rapid and spent

In the fever of love’s long gone by
And pleasures twisted and bent
Twisted and bent

Like the joy
That bursts on the tip of a pin

There is always tomorrow
And tomorrow
And tomorrow’s regrets
I could lie here from dusk until dawn
Pretending to be absent

Oh you dreary days
New York lament

Tomorrow
and tomorrow

Yesterday’s snow

Yesterdays

about

Diana Rosalind New Orleans, Louisiana

After being discovered by Bobby McFerrin as a young vocal improviser in San Francisco, I spent some years writing and performing with ensembles that remain important in the history of Bay Area arts, then did time tangling with the music biz in LA & NYC, followed by a decade in Europe, recording all the while, before coming "home" to NOLA. This is a partial musical record of that journey. ... more
