This track, recorded with the heavenly, if short-lived, Bards of Now, was inspired by writings of the 14th Century Rhine mystic Meister Ekhart. I was doing my Masters at the Oakland Naropa Institute under the tutelage of defrocked priest Matthew Fox at the time. I haven't much truck with religion, but I dig the mystics. The combination of the Medieval Saz (a strummed zither-type instrument) and the Moroccan 3-stringed bass (the Gmbiri) plus the eerie sounds of Mark Deutsch's invention, the Bazantar (an electrified cross between a contrabass and a sitar) perfectly combined to realize a vision of what a rock band from the middle ages might sound like.

measureless (after meister eckhart)

into the sea all rivers flow
but the sea will never overflow
on to their destiny the rivers go
to the sea, to the sea
to the measureless sea
to the sea...to the sea...to the sea

This is a partial musical record of that journey. ... more
